Main Information

"The Turnip Twist" is the first segment of the seventh episode of the first season of The Ghost and Molly McGee, and the thirteenth episode overall.

Synopsis

Pete and Molly put a Turnip Fest to win Best Fest of the Midwest over Brighton's rival town: Perfektborg.[2]

Plot

Pete awaits for his copy if Midwest Monthly in the hopes that Brighton has been voted best town. To his disappointment, the winner is still Perfektborg who wins every month. Not wanting to be humiliated again, he and Molly approach the Mayor with the prospect of trying to win next month's issue. The Mayor is all for it and reveals his plan to launch a Turnip Festival, explaining that turnips, despite their indifferent attitude towards the root, helped make Brighton the city it is today. As Scratch insults Pete and Molly over the idea, he is sucked into the ghost realm and informed by the Barristers that he needs to raise Brighton's misery levels or else he will be sent to the Flow of Failed Phantoms.

Scratch confidently believes that the festival will be a disaster due to the subject matter, but to his surprise, everyone enjoys the festivities after it manages to go viral. Pete is approached by Eva Hernandez, a writer for Midwest Monthly, who has come to inspect the festival for next month's issue. Scratch asks Molly how she would feel should something go wrong, to which she tells him that she would get over it, but that Pete might be crushed. Not wanting to disappoint them, but also wanting to keep himself out of trouble, he recruits Geoff to be the one to ruin the festivities. Unfortunately for Scratch, Geoff ends up being very bad at this and only entertains Eva who tells Pete that Brighton is a shoe in.

As Eva is about to break a giant turnip piñata, Scratch tells Geoff the consequences of what might happen to him. In a moment of competence, Geoff tears down the piñata and coats Eva in turnip mush.

Next month's issue comes out and Brighton is hailed a disaster while Perfektborg wins again, shattering Pete. Scratch confidently tells Geoff that he has succeeded in that the festival was not his fault and he still has his job. However, Dianne the motel owner, suddenly gets calls from people asking to book a stay for next year's Turnip Festival, showing that it was not a total disaster. The Ghost Barristers are disappointed to see Brighton's misery level still went down.

Trivia

  • This episode's title, along with "All Systems No", was leaked online and later removed, only for them to replace "Game Night" and "The Don't-Gooder".
  • This episode features a death and revival of the Mayor's pet goldfish.
  • The Ghost Council saw Scratch's misery in Brighton has gone lower.
  • Brighton's founding date is shown to be February 29, 1874. 1874 was not a leap year. This could be an error, as the actual founding date (seen on the town's water-tower since "The Curse") is February 29, 1872, which is on an actual leap year.
  • This episode takes place before "Monumental Disaster" and "Talent Show" because the production code for this episode and "All Systems No" was swapped with said episode.
  • The statue of Sally Tugbottom was shown before "Monumental Disaster". That's because the production code for this episode was swapped with the next episode.
