Synopsis[]

A flood of lost memories forces Scratch to make big decisions about his afterlife.[1]

Plot[]

When Scratch thinks funnel cakes are the key to his memories, he and Molly get excited to learn that his life was apparently amazing. When they tell the rest of the family, they bring up one key detail that's missing; how did Scratch die?

Darryl is able to find Scratch's childhood friend, Adia, online, and Molly decides to talk to her to find out more details about Scratch's life and how it eventually came to an end. However, Adia is confused when Molly brings up her and Scratch going on adventures, stating that he never did, despite her asking him numerous times, and that he wasn't dead. The call is cut off before Molly can ask more questions.

While Molly and Scratch are absolutely baffled, Libby and Ollie come in to reveal they've found something. They were confused about why the funnel cakes would bring back Scratch's memories and, with June's help, they discovered it wasn't the funnel cakes at all, but Scratch jumping into the body of Todd Mortenson that triggered it. With that knowledge, and looking more into the Pop-Up Book of the Paranormal, they were able to discover that Scratch is actually Todd's Wraith.

Initially, Molly and Scratch don't believe it, but once they see the evidence, it finally allows Scratch to recall his life, and confirms it is the truth. His fear of death led him to avoid taking risks, brushing off Adia every time she asked him to go on an adventure with her, and he stayed in Brighton, working a miserable job, until he was so numb his soul left his body. After becoming a wraith, he slowly lost his memories, until he couldn't remember anything.

Upset, Scratch flies away, and the group goes around both Brighton and the Ghost World to try to find Scratch. By the end of the day, there's no trace of him, but Molly has a feeling about where he might be. She finds Scratch sitting on the sidewalk, looking at 'his' house, where his husk is currently sitting and watching TV. He wonders what his life would've been like if he had gone on adventures with Adia, instead of playing it safe.

Molly then tells him that maybe he doesn't have to wonder, that he could go back to his body and live out the rest of his life going on adventures. Scratch tries to brush the idea away, warning Molly that, since he lost his memories of his human life, he might lose his memories of his time as a wraith if he goes back, and therefore forget her. But Molly isn't deterred, telling him that he's doing the same thing again, but he's braver now, and that even if he forgets her, he won't forget that, and that he deserves to live his life.

With a heartfelt hug, and one last look back for some words of comfort, Scratch goes up and rings the doorbell to the house. Todd steps out, and is confused to see no one there, but a girl standing under a streetlight. When he calls out to her, Scratch enters his body, and starts to fuse with it again. As a light engulfs him, a now living Scratch gives Molly one last, thankful smile before the process is complete.

Some time after, Todd 'Scratch' Mortenson is happily walking down the street, now dressed in a Hawaiian shirt and bright orange shorts, instead of his usual beige suit. On the way, Libby tries to talk to him about ghost theories, including the existence of a Ghost Council, but while he thinks it's cool, he tells her he doesn't believe in ghosts. Darryl asks if he wants to see a cool prank at the school, but as much as he likes a good prank, Scratch tells him that he has to go, even calling him 'random kid'. Sharon and Pete try to get Scratch to try a Yim-Yum, or have some Surly Sid's Strawberry Soda, but he turns them down, telling them he has a bus to catch.

At the bus stop, Molly is waiting for him, and when asked, Scratch happily tells her why he's in such a good mood. He sold his house, quit his job, and is now free to explore the world. Molly is happy for him, but when the bus comes, asks him to not forget his friends in Brighton, and to visit sometime. He agrees, and says that this trip is going to be 'enhappifying', making Molly smile. He tells her goodbye, but he calls her 'Moll' as he does so, which confuses Molly as she never told him her name, but he's already on the bus before she can question him.

As he leaves, Sharon asks if Molly is okay, and she says that she's just happy that Scratch is able to live his life now. Libby recites a heartfelt quote, and the group decides to go have some ice cream in Scratch's honor.

The credits roll and we see pictures of Scratch going on adventures, eventually reuniting with Adia, before cutting to a portrait Molly made of her and Scratch, as a ghost, giving each other a warm hug.

Trivia[]

  • This is the third episode of the series that doesn't have a title card first since "The Curse" and "The New (Para)Normal".
  • This episode and "Jinx vs. The Human World" are the only episodes to air in 2024, which means that the show lasted just over 2 years.
  • This was the final episode to air as part of a regular schedule on Disney XD on January 22, 2024.
  • When Scratch walked past Molly near the end of the episode, she was reading a book called Bill & Bob's OK Adventure. This is a nod to the two creators, Bill Motz and Bob Roth. This is also the third time the book has appeared since "Ready, Set, Snow!" and "All Night Plight".
  • Scratch being revealed to be a wraith was foreshadowed in "The Many Lives of Scratch" when he reveals he does not have a death day.
  • After Scratch departs on the bus, an instrumental reprise begins, seemingly of the song "It's a Lose-Lose".
  • Despite promotional and commercial material stating this and "Jinx vs. The Human World" would be the season finale this would end up being the series finale, as confirmed by Bill Motz.
    • A third season was planned with "Jinx vs. The Human World" as the second season finale and the third being the final season, with this episode included in the season, however, as a result of the cancellation of the series, this episode was ordered for the second season to give the series closure.
