"The Curse" is the first segment of the first episode of the first season of The Ghost and Molly McGee, and the first episode overall, which also serves as the series premiere.
It premiered on October 1, 2021 on Disney Channel, alongside "First Day Frights".
Synopsis
Molly and the McGees move into their forever home, only to discover that it’s already occupied by a grumpy ghost.[5]
Plot
In the ghost realm, the Ghost Council rate lower tier ghosts with spreading misery in the human world. Those that fail are sent to the "Flow of Failed Phantoms". Scratch is a lower tier ghost who despite being a rude and disgusting individual has successfully spread misery in the town of Brighton. The Council nevertheless look down on him, but consider him "adequate". Meanwhile, the McGees consisting of parents Pete and Sharon and their kids Darryl and Molly move to Brighton, after having moved all over the United States. Molly is an optimistic girl who is the only one who actually seems to like their new home: a old and decrepit house that Scratch just so happens to inhabit.
Overjoyed, Molly immediately moves into the attic, declaring it her room, and encounters Scratch in a rather comically abrupt manner. Far from scared, Molly is excited at the thought of having a house with a ghost in it. Furious at this development, Scratch tries to get rid of her, but to no avail. He decides to curse her so that he will always be there to haunt her. Unfortunately, this turns out to be a blessing for Molly as this means that he is forever tied to her, right down to being able to summon him by calling his name. Scratch then seeks the Council on how to un-curse someone to which they snobbishly tell him that he needs to scare the homeowners out so that they can never return to the house.
Scratch immediately decides to scare the rest of the McGees, who are about to leave the house, but Molly stops them, claiming that Scratch is her new friend and that he is simply "hangry". After some reluctance from them, they decide to accept Scratch as being part of their family, much to his chagrin.
Molly vidchats with her Grandma Nin who tells her that in Thailand, many houses have ghosts and that they use a Sal Phra Phum (spirit house) so that the ghost can live comfortably. Molly finds a dollhouse and offers it to Scratch who graciously accepts it under the condition he gets fed. Meanwhile, in the Ghost Realm, the Chairman notices that Brighton's misery has slightly gone down.

Trivia
- This episode, along with "First Day Frights", was screened early two days before the premiere.
- This is the only episode in Season One to neither feature the theme song nor a title card.
- Grandma Nin tells Molly about Sal Phra Phum or ศาลพระภูมิ (Ṣ̄āl phrap̣hūmi) which translates to "spirit house".
- Scratch tells Molly that he is partial to Strawberry soda. This is an in joke related to Thai culture. Strawberry soda, specifically Fanta brand, is often used as an offering to spirits. Thailand natives joke that if someone were to drink Fanta on a special day, that they are most likely a ghost.[6]
- One of the "best friend activities" Molly suggested after Scratch applied the curse was washing old people, much to the ghost's irritation and confusion. This was stated to be improv done by Ashly Burch, Molly's voice actress, in the anniversary stream conducted on Twitter on October 1st, 2022.
Errors
- After Pete calls the house "a bit of a fixer-upper", a shutter falls off one of the windows. However, in the next shot of the house, the shutter is back on the window.
- Despite never having introduced themselves to one another, Molly and Scratch knew each other's names. However:
- In the case of Scratch using Molly's full name when invoking his curse, it is possible he might have overheard her saying that her new bedroom needed "the Molly McGee touch".
- In the case of Molly calling Scratch back by name, by that point she had taken her time setting up her new bedroom.
- When Scratch says "I didn't curse Molly McGee", his tongue turns red when he gets to "Molly".
