The Chairman is the main antagonist of The Ghost and Molly McGee. He was the evil and tyrannical ruler of the Ghost World, and the mysterious head of the Ghost Council, before being destroyed by Molly McGee.
Appearance[]
The Chairman mostly covered in an inky black cloak surrounded by a lite blue aura. His hands are made from bones, and his face of his cloak closely resembles a skull while his true face (If he even has one) is never seen. The Chairman is also the tallest of all the ghosts in the series.
Personality[]
The Chairman is a fearsome and ruthless spirit who takes to abusing his power and can be extremely sadistic. He favors making mortals (especially humans) miserable and punishing his fellow ghosts who fail in doing their jobs. The reason for this is because he feeds on said misery and when having a sufficient amount, he is satiated but when not, he becomes very dangerous. Despite this, the Chairman could also be fair to ghosts who lived up to his expectations.
Despite not talking, he is able to convey emotions through facial expressions and body language. When Scratch asked if he needed to eat in A Very Hungry Ghost, the Chairman shot him an irritated look. Moreover, the Chairman had enough lucidity for an "uh oh" face when Molly disintegrated him with her joy.
Another gesture would be when the Chairman would give a ghost a thumbs up or down. The former as a sign of being impressed and recognition/congratulations, while the latter as a sign of inflicting punishment.
Along with all this, on several occasions such as near the end of The Curse, The Chairman can be heard hissing.
History[]
The Chairman makes his first appearance in The Curse, when he and the Ghost Council reviewed the Cedar Valley's ghost upon learning that joy has increase largely in her, while misery has decrease. The ghost tried to plead to the Chairman that she couldn't do anything due to a recently opened dog rescue center. But, since she was expected to compete with it, he sent her to The Flow of Failed Phantoms for punishment.
In Scare Tactics, the Chairman made a solo appearance when it was revealed that this year's scaring seminar would have the ghosts show what they learn from their lesson rather than a head count. After one ghost failed to show what he learned, the Chairman sent him to the Flow as punishment. Next, Geoff manage to show his skills, which resulted in him passing. But, when Scratch failed, the Chairman nearly sent Scratch to the Flow, only for Geoff to save him by explain that Scratch has created a new way to scare people, and Molly (who was scared of Daryll's Spider) was proof, which resulted in the Chairman passing Scratch.
In A Very Hungry Ghost, the Chairman and the Ghost Council arrived at the McGees' house after hearing about the Thai holiday, which meant Scratch had to be on the clock to serve him, and the Chairman would have taken away Scratch if the service was subpar or bad. Fortunately for Scratch, Molly and Darryl worked together to prevent the Chairman from doing so, by making meals to keep the Chairman and the council satisfied and therefore the Chairman and the council left Scratch alone for the time being.
In Molly Vs. The Ghost World, Molly, who had become a wraith and gained the power to turn anything she touches to joy, confronted the Ghost Council and with her power of joy released all the ghosts trapped in The Flow of Failed Phantoms and destroyed the Chairman.
Following his destruction, Scratch automatically becomes his successor. During Scratch's succession, it was slowly revealed that, while he ate misery and was generally an evil spirit, even the Chairman had standards, as in addition to adding ghosts that are too scary and destructive (like Lord Doom and the Frightmares) to the Flow of Failed Phantoms along with those who aren't scary enough to feed him, and filed the paperwork in a possessed and dangerous filing system known as the Curse Cabinet when not monitoring the misery meters, and Scratch was expected to do the same. In addition, as Jinx pointed out in "Jinx vs. the Human World" (with a playful "no offense" to him), the Chairman never used his full power to conquer the living like he had ruled over the dead, even though human misery was his main food source.
Sightings[]
Trivia[]
- The Chairman's appearance highly resembles the Grim Reaper.
- It is revealed in The Jig is Up that the reason ghosts need to raise misery is because the Chairman eats misery.
- The Chairman was never a living spirit, and is instead the embodiment of misery.
- This explains why Molly's joy disintegrated him, but was not harmful to other ghosts.
- While their diets are different, Scratch and the Chairman are both gluttons that follow their pallet (the Chairman eats nothing but misery because it tastes good to him, and Scratch would eat out of the garbage but would spit out any health food that he finds disgusting) and neither of them are very social (Scratch tries to put himself out there, but being constantly shut down for his poor manners forces him to gaslight himself into thinking he's better off alone, and the Chairman doesn't even speak). This makes the Chairman a sort of foil to Scratch as it shows the kind of ghost he could've become if Molly hadn't befriended him.
