"Howlin' Harriet" is the first segment of the second episode of the first season of The Ghost and Molly McGee, and the third episode overall. It premiered to 0.29 million viewers.

Synopsis

Molly attends a Wilder Scouts camping trip to scope out her options for a best friend.[6]

Plot

Molly has put together a chart of potential human best friends that she can bond with, including Libby, Sheela, and Kat, and makes plans to go camping with them because they are Wilder-Scouts. While Scratch couldn't care less, Molly considers it a big deal for her, as she wants to have a longtime commitment, though she insists that Scratch will always be her number one. As he denies having any such friend, another ghost named Geoff appears and claims to be friends with Scratch, despite it being clearly obvious that Scratch considers him an "annoying coworker". Molly invites both to come along; Scratch so that he can file his scare report, and Geoff because he wants to hang out with Scratch.

At camp, Sheela and Kat already display competence in the wilderness, while Libby only came because her parents wanted her to get fresh air. Molly keeps a checklist of qualities among the three with the bottom one being the "x factor", though once again Scratch does not care and simply scouts the woods. Molly, Sheela, and Kat have fun while Libby continuously gets harmed or injured by their adventure. However, at night, Libby tells the story of Howlin' Harriet, a woman who was chased by the townsfolk for "selling uncured salami on a Wednesday". She fell onto a train track and was killed with only her toes left behind. Intrigued with the story, Scratch and Geoff make plans to scare the girls.

The real Howlin' Harriet arrives with Molly thinking it is Scratch. However, Scratch reveals himself and thinks it was Geoff who stolen his chance to scare Molly, but he shows himself, and they realize she is real. Molly has the two distract Harriet and asks the rest of the girls to help her, though only Libby does so and crafts a set of toes for Harriet. The plan works, with Harriet pleased with the toes and transforming into a more complacent ghost. In the morning, Sheela, Kat, and Libby have convinced themselves that last night's events were imagined. Molly chooses Libby to be best friends, but agonizes over how to ask her, until Libby just comes right up to her and asks to be best friends instead. As Scratch finishes his report, he accidentally calls Geoff his "buddy", making him incredibly happy, much to his own displeasure.
