Frightmares are ghosts that were previously banished to the Flow of Failed Phantoms, until it was destroyed by Molly McGee when she came to the Ghost World to save Scratch. They can only be commanded by whoever holds the title of Chairman.

Appearance

Unlike other ghosts, whose ectoplasm are a glowing color all the way through with yellow eyes, Frightmares have dark purple-black ectoplasm with glowing red eyes and a sickening green flame-like aura and gangly hands. They have sharp teeth and are almost always screaming and moaning instead of using words.

Trivia

• Their name is a combination of the words "Fright/Frightening" and "Nightmares", indicating that they gain energy from their victims worst fears and paranoia, much like sobgoblins feed off sadness.
• They cause problems for humans and ghosts alike.
• While these creatures are mostly a parasitic species of their own, Howlin' Harriet did have frightmare-like traits while she was obsessing over her missing toes, hintng that common ghosts can become frightmares themselves if they let their misery and obsessions get out of hand for too long.
• The fact their rib cages are always exposed is most likely based on the Buddhist concept of lost souls full of greed, selfishness, and unforgivable sin in life become monstrous spirits ( 餓鬼 èguǐ literally "hungry ghost") in the afterlife that are always hungry yet almost never able to eat. Some cultures try to feed them anyway to ward off bad luck, but others find exorcisms more appropriate if the spirits are too far gone to regain their "humanity" through such offerings. Many stories claim this is the form most ghosts take before crossing over the after-afterlife.
