The Brighton Bandshell is a stage in Brighton's park area.
History[]
The Bandshell was an extremely popular landmark of Brighton back in its heyday. People would bring picnics and dance to the music played there, until a tornado tore it down in the 70's. For many years, the city council refused to fund rebuilding it because it was "not a priority", indicating the slow yet obvious decline in the town's community spirit.
It wasn't until Patty, a resident in the town's retirement home, brought it up to Molly McGee that the new girl on the block and her family made it a goal to restore the bandshell. First, Molly and her brother, Darryl, used the Obnoxitron and a pair of model buildings to make a bait-and-switch presentation in favor of rebuilding the bandshell, stating that it means a lot to the community, but Mayor Brunson denied it, stating that the town just won't be able to afford funding it. Feeling that isn't enough, Molly figures that if Town Hall isn't going to help, then the McGee's are going to take it to the streets, going door to door asking for money, often to the point of guilt-tripping, demanding, and annoying people with concepts like selling their cars in favor of cheaper electric models. Even Scratch "pitched in" by robbing a local credit union, though after his crime was exposed via a dye-pack, he was forced to return his "contribution" before the family could get into trouble. With the money the McGee family had left after that ordeal, it was clear they could afford the building materials needed for the project, but not the labor, prompting Molly to advertise a community work day. At first, the concept seemed ignored, but just when the McGee family was about to do it themselves, the residents of the retirement home finally shown up to help, followed up by the softball team, and before long the entire town was pitching in, so when the Bandshell was restored, so was the town's sense of community, causing Patty to quote: "THIS is the Brighton I remember". (Getting the Band(shell) Back Together)
Once the Bandshell was rebuilt, it needed a premiere concert with the kind of music to do it justice. Molly tried to get Kenny Star to preform via interception, and was extra confident about doing so since gossip of him showing up spread frighteningly fast ("Cat's out of the bag, might as well feed it some mice"-Molly McGee), but she ended up capturing Kenny Star's Stunt Double instead, leaving her with broken dreams and a loss of optimism that caused Scratch to feel his conscience kick in, prompting him to possess the bus driver of K-Pop music group Atomic Pink instead, damaging the bandshell in the process and causing the senior construction crew to repair it. (The Greatest Concert Ever)
It was here that, during the Turnip Festival, a giant turnip-shaped pinata was hung, but Geoff, determined to save Scratch from being banished to The Flow of Failed Phantoms, sabotaged it, crushing every booth in the festival, sending the editor of Midwest Monthly on a wild ride, and causing a huge mess at Town Hall as the pinata splatted open, revealing itself to be filled with turnips and costing Brighton major points in the "Best Fest of the Midwest" contest. (The Turnip Twist)
This place was one of many locations Scratch and Libby had to visit during the scavenger hunt Molly set up for them to force them to bond as friends. (Friend-Off)
A magic competition took place here between Irving the Illusionist and Darryl McGee with a little help of Molly McGee. (Alaka-Sham!)
Trivia[]
- The Bandshell is based on one that exists in real life. The crew members even compared its real life counterpart's photos with this one. [1]
