"A Doll to Die For" is the first segment of the sixth episode of the second season of The Ghost and Molly McGee, and the fiftieth episode overall.

It premiered on May 6, 2023 simultaneously on Disney Channel and Disney XD, alongside "The (After)life of the Party".[1]

Synopsis

When a scary ghost possesses a doll in the human world, Molly is determined to see the good in him.[1]

Plot

In the ghost realm, Lord Doom (a powerful ghost who torments humans and other ghosts) is causing havoc. Scratch is informed by the Ghost Council that due to the Flow of Failed Phantoms getting destroyed, Lord Doom, along with several other ghosts, have been unleashed. With no other option, Scratch places a curse on Lord Doom that whatever the first object he sees will encase his soul. He intends to use a soda bottle, but Lord Doom flees for his (After)life. Instead, Lord Doom winds up in a Weird Larry's antique shop where Hidalgo and Gertrude, who have just had their son Octavius, are set to purchase a baby doll for him. Lord Doom looks at the doll and becomes bound to it and flees the store, much to Hidalgo and Gertrude's intrigue.

Back at home, Scratch regales Lord Doom's "capture" to Molly who is impressed. They get a knock at the door and find Lord Doom in the baby doll's body who promptly attacks them. Molly and Scratch are baffled by Lord Doom's predicament who, despite still insisting on destruction, is shown to be ineffective. Molly decides to use this opportunity to help change Lord Doom for the better. Scratch does not think it is possible, but Molly manages to convince Lord Doom to go along with it. Molly trains Lord Doom in the ways of being nice and, while apparently shows acceptance towards being a better person, still displays some minor intense tendencies, much to Molly's concern.

Ironically, Scratch believes that Molly's plan worked while Molly herself fears that Lord Doom is out to get her and catches him in the middle of doing things such as cutting out Molly's head from photos and cutting up the coffee table with a chainsaw. Molly believes that Lord Doom is killing someone, but Scratch points out that it is just paint. Lord Doom reveals that he was making a collage for Molly, but realizes that he is unwanted. Molly apologizes, stating that he and everyone deserves to be loved. He accepts this, and says he needs to find someone who doesn't mind his scary intensity, but wonders who would be blindly innocent and trusting to accept him unconditionally. At that moment, Gertrude, Hidalgo, and Octavius show up asking if Molly has the doll. Now knowing that it is possessed by an evil spirit, they happily take him off their hands as Lord Doom enjoys his new life being Octavius' plaything. Molly then confirms her ability to enhappify (despite the time it took), while Scratch misses Doom and (mostly) his hummus.

Trivia

  • The doll Lord Doom is sealed in is the same kind of doll as Baby Jesse, a doll Molly constantly tries to get rid off in several episodes in the series on account she finds it too creepy even for her taste. While both dolls have a lazy eye, Baby Jesse's lazy eye is blue-ish grey with a straight black eye, while the both eyes of Lord Doom's doll form are brown. This detail alone foreshadows that, while Molly finds Lord Doom cute upon first meeting him (possibly because the forced possession corrected the lazy eye), she'd eventually find his well-meaning efforts to be nicer to be a cause for paranoia.
  • In this episode, little Octavius was already born and has a full head of hair and is old enough for toys other then rattles and teething rings, indicating this episode takes place at least a few months after "Home is Where the Haunt Is".
  • While the family's real surname had not been revealed in the episode, their fan-canon surname of Winchester is inspired by the Winchester Mystery House, which is said to be haunted.
  • This is the fourth time Scratch bestows a curse, following "The Curse", "All Systems No", and "The Lucky Penny".

Revelations

Production notes

  • Although this episode premiered in the United States on May 6, 2023, it was actually produced in 2022 according to the credits.

Allusions

  • Wander Over Yonder - Lord Doom shares the same behavior, voice and appearance as the character Lord Hater from the Disney Channel show Wander over Yonder.
  • Family Guy - Octavius who becomes Lord Doom's owner looks somewhat similar to Stewie Griffin.
